Indian Skimmer Day 10 Monday 10th  April - Agra

Agra stands on the right bank of the Yamuna River and was once the seat of the Mughal Rulers. A city enshrined in romance and famous for its beautiful medieval monuments. The passion of the Mughals for building, endowed it with some of the loveliest buildings in the world.
Check into hotel for breakfast and freshen up before visiting the Taj Mahal.

The famous Taj Mahal, is the seventh wonder of the world, built by Shah Jahan as a memorial to his wife Mumtaz Mahal along by the banks of the Yamuna River. The Taj Mahal, built in 1631- 1653, has been referred to as a poem in white marble. Taj Mahal means "Crown Palace" and is in fact the most well-preserved and architecturally beautiful tomb in the world.

The dome is made of white marble, but the tomb is set against the plain across the river and it is this background that works its magic of colours that, through their reflection, change the view of the Taj. The colours change at different hours of the day and during different seasons. Like a jewel, the Taj sparkles in moonlight when the semi-precious stones inlaid into the white marble on the main mausoleum catch the glow of the moon. The Taj is pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines. These changes, they say, depict the different moods of woman.
Lunch at hotel.

Afternoon visit to the Agra Fort, where we can also view the Taj from across the Yamuna River. The Agra Fort was also built alongside the Yamuna River and stretches for almost 2.5 km. The fort contains splendid palaces both in red sandstone and white marble, built by two generations of prolific master builders.

Evening visit to see the fantastic Kalakriti Live Show, which tells the story of Shah Jahan’s love for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal and how the Taj Mahal came to be built.

Evening meal at hotel.
Meals – Breakfast, lunch and evening meal.
Overnight at the Utkarsh Vilas in Agra.

UK Tour Leader – Barry Stewart
Barry was born with binoculars in his hands! He has been a keen birdwatcher his whole life. Barry has been a bird ringer for over 20 years and is a superb all round naturalist, writing many articles about wildlife in general, for different publications.

Professionally, he worked for the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in Slimbridge, Gloucestershire, before he was asked to assist with the setting up of the WWT centre in Llanelli.

Barry has a first class degree in Environmental Biology and has spent the last ten years carrying out environmental impact assessments, where he advises various councils and independent clients about habitat creation and wildlife conservation, specialising in sensitive species.

He is a very enthusiastic and competent photographer, having numerous photographs published in books and magazines. His wildlife passion also extends into the field of lepidoptera, which has naturally led him into macro photography and to the recent publication of the book, ‘Moths of Glamorgan’ of which he is co-author. Season dependent, Barry invariably travels to India with his light trap in order to safely lure various insects for identification photography, adding another dimension to this exciting tour. Barry is also the BSBI recorder for Glamorgan.
